About this deal

This was one of those books I really wanted to like; there seemed to be such a general buzz around it and I hoped it would live up to the hype. Unfortunately, I just found it average overall.

My mum always describes mediocre films and books as ‘quite entertaining’ or ‘diverting’. This book quite simply sums up both these statements; it was ‘ok’ and it did keep me entertained for a couple of days, but it is no great work of fiction. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.

‘The Wych Elm’ by Tana French – review with spoilers of a great book

Beatrice’s journey as she unravels her sister’s events that led to Tess’s death will keep you hooked to your seat. Can she finally find the truth about what happened to her sister? The plot is well constructed, drawing the reader right into the center of the mystery. Rosamund Lupton has revealed Beatrice’s grief and loss so well that readers will find themselves empathizing with her. Thank you for visiting this bio. My books are not easy to slot into a particular genre, and you can usually be found under 'contemporary fiction', 'literary fiction', 'political thriller' and 'psychological thriller.' If you try one I hope you enjoy it. Without spoiling it, a lot of the information involved is heavily medical, and went right over my head. So even now having finished the book I still can’t entirely understand what the motive behind it all was. Truly marvelous! As compelling as it is stylish, SISTER exists in that rare place where crime fiction and literature coincide.”— Jeffery Deaver

The story focuses on Beatrice, who, knowing that her sister, Tess, is missing, takes the first flight to England from New York, hoping to find her. She’s given the news in the middle of Sunday lunch. When Tess is found dead, Beatrice is sure there is more to the murder than meets the eye. Bee is certain that Tess didn’t commit suicide. Their family and the police accept the sad reality, but Bee feels sure that Tess has been murdered. Single-minded in her search for a killer, Bee moves into Tess’s apartment and throws herself headlong into her sister’s life—and all its secrets. She’s the only one who hasn’t come to terms with Tess’s death since she believes that her sister could not have committed suicide. Beatrice goes on a journey of self-discovery by moving from her sister’s flat, socializing with the students and artists to at least get clues about what might have happened. All this time, Bea doesn’t get any support from her mother or fiancé, who only wants Tess to rest in peace.Though her family and the police see a grieving sister in denial, unwilling to accept the facts, Bee uncovers the affair Tess was having with a married man and the pregnancy that resulted, and her difficultly with a stalker who may have crossed the line when Tess refused his advances. Tess was also participating in an experimental medical trial that might have gone very wrong. As a determined Bee gives her statement to the lead investigator, her story reveals a predator who got away with murder–and an obsession that may cost Bee her own life. Bee is certain that Tess didn’t commit suicide. Their family and the police accept the sad reality, but Bee feels sure that Tess has been murdered. Single-minded in her search for a killer, Bee moves into Tess's apartment and throws herself headlong into her sister's life--and all its secrets. The police and Tess’s family conclude the case as suicide and try moving on with their lives while accepting the self-questioning and revelations. According to the police report, Tess killed herself due to postpartum depression after giving birth to a still baby. However, she takes things into her own hands and embarks on a journey to find the truth, no matter the price she has to pay. A compulsive thriller with genuine originality. Very clever, very surprising, very touching. I devoured it.”— Louise Candlish
