stars out of 5 — “Fashion and hype be damned — this is thrilling, incontrovertible evidence of a major new talent in our midst. As catchy as those reference points are, it's the lyrics that have won this band a fiercely dedicated crowd very quickly.

elsewhere, there were grim tales of girls whod ended up on the streets (she dont do major credit cards, i doubt she does receipts sun goes down) and glorious swipes at the rocknroll clones that arose on the back of the great garage rock boom of 2002 (yeah i'd like to tell you all my problems/you're not from new york city, you're from rotherham fake tales of san francisco). You can hear The Kinks, you can sense The Smiths and a love of the 60s but most of all you can hear The Arctic Monkeys. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006 by Domino Recording Company and on 21 February 2006 in the United States. hence the razor-sharp lyricism that fuels songs like a certain romance, a witty observation of small-town life where theres only music so that theres new ringtones and where going out could sometimes mean having a pool cue wrapped around your head. The only thing I have against this album is that I don't think of it as quintessential vinyl material- there isn't a great deal of difference in the vinyl and the digital versions. When Whatever People Say I Am hit the streets in January 2006, it sold a gobsmacking 118,501 copies within its first week of release, which not only made it the fastest selling debut ever, but it sold more than the rest of the Top 20 combined a remarkable achievement by any measure. A lot of my friends and I used to go out having blared this through our hi-fi's at uni when it came out and it always set us up for a good night out. Despite their tender years--or perhaps because of them--with 'Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not,' Arctic Monkeys found a new and unique way to chronicle the rushes of youth, and in doing so created a classic take on a stage of life we all experience. Working with a band that is looser and grittier than the Mondays, Shaun Ryder sounds reinvigorated, creating.

With his later side projects (The Last Shadow Puppets with Miles Kane, and the soundtrack to the film 'Submarine'), he has become one of my favourite young musicians. The Arctic Monkeys' debut had loud guitars, fast paced singing, and is an even mix of 'in-your-face' punk and indie, so 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' was my idea of a very good album. Not only was it good, it was impressive, the whole CD sounded so raw, yet polished, that you would think that the Monkeys had been established for years. The songs range from the good to the excellent, my favourites will always be the number one hit singles: 'When the Sun Goes Down'(I just love the melody at the beginning of it) and the throbbing indie anthem 'I Bet you Look Good on the Dancefloor', but all of the album only tracks benefit from consistent catchy guitar riffs and strong vocals. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This album takes everything that's good about the current crop of British bands (stop-start guitars, great hooks, catchy and danceable bass lines, great lyrics) and then turns it up to 11, so to speak. With their kicky hooks, the songs owe more to Warped Tour thrashers than to stoic post-punk inspirations. When there is sound, it's honestly still a little quieter than my other records, but with the volume raised a bit (nothing unreasonable) it sounds just fine.

Even now the young Alex Turner's lyrics are genuinely impressive in how vivid a vision of the People's Republic of South Yorkshire they can create. For me, it has a lot of memories attached to it so I'll always think of it as their best for me, but it captures a period of British music where things felt original and unique which is sorely lacking these days. No band will ever be the Beatles, and Oasis have two great albums while the Arctic Monkeys have only released one album to date, and its a totally different style and sound than Oasis. and “God Smack” give Layne Staley a chance to explore a vocal arsenal that encompasses bluesy wails, unholy screams, and.The all time classic debut album from the anthemic indie-rockers Arctic Monkeys, originally released in 2006 to hyper acclaim and winning a number of awards including a Brit, a Mercury and a Grammy nomination.
